Biografia
Początkowo występował wśród kolegów jako "Jazzy", potem zmieniając pseudonim na "Jay-Z". Zadebiutował u boku Jaz O na jego płycie Words of the Jaz w dwóch utworach - Hawaiian Sophgie i Originators. Od 1989 brał udział w kilku produkcjach m.in. z Sauce Money i Original Flavor by w 1994 roku zadebiutować singlem I Can't Get With That. Wkrótce wraz z przyjaciółmi – Damonem Dashem i Kareemem "Biggsem" Burkealemem – założył własną wytwórnię płytową, nazwaną Roc-A-Fella Records.
Pierwszą wydaną płytą pod szyldem Roc-A-Fella Records, był album Jaya-Z Reasonable Doubt. Utwory z tej płyty – Ain't No Nigga' (feat. Foxy Brown), oraz Can't Knock the Hustle (feat. Mary J. Blige) stały się przebojami i uczyniły z rapera jedną z ważniejszych postaci w świecie hip-hopowym.
Drugi album, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, nagrany we współpracy z DJ-em Premierem, nie odniósł większego sukcesu. Dopiero trzeci album, Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life zdobył uznanie i już w pierwszych tygodniach sprzedał się w ponad 300 000 egzemplarzy. Do sukcesu płyty niewątpliwie przyczynili się zaproszeni przez Jaya goście – DMX, Too $hort, Jermaine Dupri, a także znakomici producenci – Swizz Beatz i Timbaland. Po wydaniu tego krążka Jay-Z rozpoczął tournée na dużą skalę, wkrótce też stał się jednym z najpopularniejszych raperów wschodniego wybrzeża USA.
Pod koniec 1999 roku ukazała się jego trzecia płyta – Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter, przeszła jednak bez specjalnego rozgłosu. Jednak już w 2000 roku Jay-Z wydał album The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, skąd pochodzi m.in. utwór "Just Wanna Love U".
W 2001 roku Jay-Z wydał kolejny album pt. The Blueprint, na którym znalazł się m.in. utwór nagrany z Eminemem. Rok później powstał album The Blueprint²: The Gift & the Curse. Na płycie znalazły się utwory nagrane z takimi artystami jak Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Sean Paul, Beyoncé, Lenny Kravitz czy Beanie Sigel.
W 2002 roku, razem z R. Kellym nagrali płytę The Best of Both Worlds. Dwa lata później ukazała się płyta Shawna Cartera z rockowym zespołem Linkin Park zatytułowana Collision Course. 18 lipca 2004 roku, na potrzeby programu MTV, w hollywoodzkiej Roxy Hall został nagrany ich wspólny koncert, podczas którego zmiksowano kilka utworów Linkin Park i Jaya.
Raper od stycznia 2005 był prezesem wytwórni Def Jam. Wcześniej jego własna firma – Roc-A-Fella Records została sprzedana Def Jam Recordings (oficjalnie z powodu niezgody między właścicielami – Jayem-Z i Damonem Dashem). Jay-Z stanął na czele połączonych firm.
Jest mężem wokalistki Beyoncé Knowles.
Ma własną firmę odzieżową Rocawear założoną w 1999.
Jay-Z jest również współwłaścicielem drużyny koszykarskiej New Jersey Nets.
W 2009 odszedł z wytwórni Def Jam Recordings i po raz pierwszy wydał płytę w innej wytwórni - Roc Nation. Płyta nosi tytuł The Blueprint 3.
Artysta pojawił się w Krakowie na Coke Live Music Festival w 2006 roku, był również gościem Open'er Festival w Gdyni 5 lipca 2008 roku.
5 listopada 2009 roku na koncercie z okazji 20 lecia zburzenia muru berlińskiego (oraz w ramach trwającej w tym czasie gali MTV) wykonał wspólnie z U2 utwór Sunday Bloody Sunday z repertuaru irlandzkiej grupy.
